PCF Certification (ISO 14067)

PCF (Product Carbon Footprint) indicates the amount of greenhouse gas emissions related to the life cycle of a product or service, expressed as a carbon footprint (CO₂ equivalent) based on the ISO 14067 standard.

ISO 14067 specifies principles, requirements, and guidelines for the quantification and reporting of the carbon footprint of products, in accordance with the life cycle assessment (LCA) standards ISO 14040 and ISO 14044.

PCF certification involves both document and on-site assessments to ensure the accuracy of the underlying data used to calculate the carbon footprint of a product or service. It verifies the credibility of a company's carbon footprint claims and confirms, through objective evidence, that specific requirements have been met.

Effectiveness of Certification

Stakeholder requirements

  • Both internal and external stakeholders seek accurate and transparent information to make purchasing decisions about products. Through independently verified product carbon footprints, stakeholders can assess the robustness and credibility of brand claims.

Competitive advantage

  • Customers are seeking low-carbon products and expect organizations to have measures and plans in place to reduce GHG emissions. By disclosing independently verified PCFs related to products and services, companies can gain a competitive advantage, enhance brand reputation, and strengthen ESG performance.

Benchmarking

  • It can be difficult for companies to differentiate products based on their carbon footprint. An independent certification increases visibility and provides assurance that the data is accurate and reliable.

Certification process

Preparation – Review of basic data, verification plan, and sampling plan.

Stage 1 – Definition of system boundaries and confirmation of basic data.

Stage 2 – Data verification, list of findings, and final verification report.
